Hi Lynne,

We've had a lovely few days in and around London. The show was brilliant, I was very impressed with Papa Truck who were all accomplished musicians and also, immensely entertaining. I was very proud of you, you were naturally at home on that stage and I was thrilled to bits with the way you sang "So Far Away" and the way it was arranged. I heard a lady in front of me say what a lovely song it was and I was dying to tell her I had written it. lol. I would love to have a copy of the dvd when it's available. I suppose things will seem a little flat for the time being but with Christmas coming up, it will not seem like that for long. Well done again Lynne, you were brilliant.

Donal and I loved your show last night. It was entertaining and so uplifting. You looked gorgeous in your three different outfits and you were clearly in your element. I love your music and have already played your CD twice this morning. Wendy, my daughter, is also enjoying it.

If I only have one night out in 2010 it will be at the Kenton when you appear again.

Congratulations and thank you for a terrific night.

What fun!

With best wishes

Kenton Theatre December 2009 write up in The Henley Standard, Oxon

Great Music, Humour and Fun at the Kenton with Lynne Butler and Papa Truck

Last Saturday Henley based Lynne Butler vocalist, songwriter and musician returned to the Kenton Theatre with bluegrass band Papa Truck. The concert had everything from ballads, fast finger pickin’ foot tapping music, a little salsa and even two carols!

Lynne featured music from her albums ‘A Little Country, A little Bluegrass and a Whole Lot of Me’ with ‘Thinking about love’ a favourite. Her latest album ‘Talk To The Face’ she says “is based on the fact that men always talk to my boobs and not my face”. The album is a blend of light-hearted, humorous songs and soulful ballads with bluegrass instrumentation. She also has an album for children, that has proved very popular.

The line-up of Papa Truck, also local, based in South Buckinghamshire, was formed when Dan Abram (banjo) and Martin Selman (vocals, guitar and mandolin) were joined by Ryan Quartermaine (harmony vocals and guitar) and Sparkie Dalton (harmony vocals and double bass). Their influences are from The Beatles to Van Halen and George Formby to Union Station, also the sounds on the “Oh Brother Where Art Thou” film.

Lynne’s voice would be suitable for most genres of music but bluegrass is the way she is heading and clearly she is no longer ‘one of Henley’s areas best kept secrets’ as mentioned in the Henley Standard last year. She has an increasing fan base and is also hosting two bluegrass radio shows a month on www.ukcountryradio.com

Papa Truck opened the show and they are the tightest band around, blending the banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass. To emphasise their local links they performed their album track Chiltern Hills (that includes the line ‘travelling Nettlebed to Thame’.

Setting the humorous tone of the evening Lynne was introduced as the ‘Lady of the Night’ and proceeded to entertain with Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 to an enthusiastic reception.

The concert lasted almost 2 ½ hours, an amazing evening of great music, lovely vocals and fun.

So relaxed was this gig that a heckler in the first half was tolerated! Lynne’s son sitting in the first row had a few quips and clearly a keen fan too!

Such is the range of Lynne’s voice that she performed a yodel song and yes it was a melodious sound with frequent changes between falsetto and normal voice in the manner of Swiss mountain dwellers. This wasn’t the only song where audience participation was requested!

A special guest in the audience was Sheffield songwriter Paul Dunn, whose ‘So Far Away’ was beautifully sung by Lynne.

Papa Truck performed from their new album ‘Stand Out of the Shade’.

After the Christmas carols ‘God Rest You Merry Gentlemen’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ the evening finished with rousing versions of ‘The Bare Necessities’, ‘I Guess it Doesn’t Matter Anymore’, ‘That’s Alright Moma’ and ‘Blue Moon over Kentucky’.

If you see that either Lynne Butler or Papa Truck are appearing near you, go see them. If appearing together get in front of the queue.

Below is a recent write up in the Henley Standard for The Kenton show on 13th December 2008:

"Area's best kept secret is finally unveiled: Lynne Butler is only 43 years old but she's lived every one of them if her music is any guide.
Lynne is one of the Henley area's undiscovered secrets. She's a local-born girl who has had her self-penned, cleverly phrased and emotionally literate songs played on the radio and internet stations from Australia to Canada but not many outside of the villages of Highmoor, Nettlebed, Woodcote and Stoke Row know her work.

She started to put that right at The Kenton this weekend when she appeared with her band for a two-hour celebration of her life and music.

Lynne travelled to the USA in her 20s to learn more about her favoured country and bluegrass music.

She was married and widowed in her 30s, then became a single mother before forging ahead with a dual career as children's entertainer and adult - very adult at times - singer.

Lynne has a clear, warm full voice which can be powerful but never loses sight of her song. She brings nuance and understanding to her ballads - some of which are heart-rending.

Perhaps her more strident material can be in-your-face - she has an anabashed openness about her attitude to men and their uses.

One particular song called 'Talk to the Face' is an appeal for men to look her in the eye instead of ten inches further south, but then she'll admit she enjoyes the attention no matter where the gaze falls.

This was a good night with a tight band and near faultless performance from Lynne despite having a cold.

She's hoping to repeat the gig next year by which time maybe a few more will know who she is - because they probably ought to; she's oe of our own, perhaps we should celebrate that."

Lynne,

The Kenton show is great. There are so many highlights, I don't know where to begin. It's studio quality in 1 take. The vocals on Thinking About Love are outstanding. Talk to The Face is very well done. (After 9 to 5, I thought you would add it as a medley.) I could blab on all night. I can tell you were having fun, and the rapport with Papa Truck really adds to the show. I loved the cartoonish songs at the end. Thanks so much.

Be Well,
Herb
Hi Lynne

I'm really enjoying the CD. It's an interesting mix of songs and I'm especially impressed with the writing and song construction. You've learned your craft very well and this deserves to go far. I'll do something for the Henley Standard in a couple of weeks after I have my HAODS commitments out of the way. In the meantime why not send it to BBC Radio Berls or Oxford. I presume they have country shows and it's good enough to be played.

Reference for Party

We had a celebration summer party last year, and Lynne Butler provided the live music. We left it to her discretion to play appropriate music and songs to suit the mood of the people, the venue and the occasion.

Lynne provided exactly the right mix of songs for each stage of the party. She read the guests beautifully and reacted with exactly the right mix of music and amusement. She has a beautiful voice; so much so that, after the event, my guests chastised me for not positioning her right in the centre of the party.

As well as covering a mix of music from across the years, Lynne has written some of of her own; they are very witty and a cheeky replay of everyday life. The clues are in the titles: "Talk to the Face" and "Out of the Mouths of Babes"... They're great!

Lynne is a charming lady who I would happily recommend to anyone who is planning a special occasion. She won't let you down.

The Kenton Gig 2009

Lynne Butler opened the night at the Kenton with Dolly Parton, which set the tone for a vibrant and exciting evening. She shared the night with Papa Truck and, together, they made a powerful combination. The audience were totally immersed in terrific, foot-tapping music with clever lyrics. Lynne's own songs cock a "cheeky" snook at some everyday life experiences; "Talk to the Face" rather than lower down, and "Out of the Mouths of Babes" should give you a clue....!

I am very much looking forward to her next concert. I hope that she will sing the Yodelling Song again. Don't know how she does it!
